Frequently Asked Questions
The most frequently asked question...Does acupuncture hurt?

Not much. The only pain that may occur is when the needle first penetrates the skin. There should be a sensation with the
needling such as heaviness, tingling or pressure.
No matter what you are being treated for, most patients feel relaxed after
acupuncture.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a system of medicine which dates back thousands of years. It is the insertion of very fine needles into the body.
There is nothing in or on the needles and they are nothing like the  needles everyone knows from their doctor's office.

What can you treat?

In short, Traditional Chinese Medicine can treat most diseases even though we are best known for treating pain, infertility,
gynecology and stress. To expand on this, acupuncture is different from western medicine in that we do not have to know the
exact bacteria, virus or physiological condition that is causing the illness. In traditional Chinese medicine we treat based on the
pattern or holistic diagnosis.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, we accept insurance. However, many health plans do not cover acupuncture, so please check with your insurance
company. Auto insurance usually cover acupuncture treatments and it is also very good for these injuries.

What is Tui Na, cupping, moxabustion and gua sha?

Tui Na
is literally translated as "push and grasp". However, it is a broader term including massage, stretching, pressure point
therapy and exercises. Our acupuncturist, Fred was very lucky to have one of the best Tui Na masters in the world teach him for
several years.  With this teaching and Fred's background in the martial arts,  he believes that Tui Na is his area of expertise.

Cupping is the use of putting fire for a split second into glass cups and applying them to the skin. It usually feels good and
patients  like this procedure. It is usually used for local pain. This is what Gwenyth Paltrow was showing off several years ago
and has received a lot of media coverage lately.

Moxabustion or simply "moxa" is the burning of the herb mugwort near the skin to produce a local warm sensation which also
usually feels good.

Gua Sha is translated as scraping. It is part of Chinese folk medicine and still used today. It is generally used to treat the
common cold and fever. It uses a material similar to plastic or jade to literally scrape the skin. It does hurt a little bit and will leave
marks.

What type of herbs do you offer?

In our office, we have a complete Chinese herbal pharmacy. We prefer to use the powdered concentrated form of the herb and
pills instead of the raw herb. The advantage is that we can make a custom prescription if needed or simply prescribe the herbal
pills which are easy to take and inexpensive, versus the raw herb that has to be boiled and is not very pleasant to drink.
